NORTH CHARLESTON — Scoring doesn’t seem to be an issue for Bishop England this year.

The Bishops placed second at the Stall Thanksgiving Classic last week with a pair of offensive onslaughts to open the season.

Bishop England shot past Academic Magnet, 65-37, on Wednesday before blowing out Stall, 77-53, on Friday. The Bishops’ 142 points scored through their first two games mark the most productive start to a season since 2005. The last time Bishop England scored as many points and won its first two games of the season, it was 1997.

“If we play our perfect game, we’ll hang with anybody,” Bishop England coach Bryan Grevey said. “Because we’re so deep and we have a lot of shooters who can score the ball. I’m comfortable playing everybody on our team.”

Bishops senior Brendan McHale followed a 29-point performance on Wednesday with 30 points on Friday to earn all-tournament honors. McHale did most of his work in bunches, scoring 15 in the third quarter against Magnet — including 11 straight in four minutes — and pouring in 23 in the first half against Stall.

“Brendan really got going in there in the third quarter,” Grevey said on Wednesday. “And I thought our defense, more importantly, really played a huge hand in changing the game.”

Bishop England limited Academic Magnet to just two field goals in the second quarter. The Bishops returned out of halftime to surrender just one field goal through the first 4:48 of the third as their lead grew to 17. Grevey credited junior guard Leo Albano for his on-ball defense and senior forward Christian Drummond’s ability to anchor the post.

It was Drummond’s offense that broke the game open against Stall. The senior scored 16 of his 21 points in the third quarter to give Bishop England a 36-point advantage entering the fourth.

“We can score with anybody, but what’s going to win games is our defensive effort,” Grevey said. “Christian really makes it hard on defenses because he’s capable of playing inside or stepping out and shooting the three. He’s one of our true leaders and we expect big things from his this year.”

The Bishops run ended with a 62-42 loss to defending SCISA AAA state champion Porter-Gaud on Saturday.

Porter-Gaud won its three tournament games by an average of 20 points. Cyclones junior center Jake Lanford was named tournament MVP while sophomore guard Josiah James was an all-tournament selection.

Bishop England hosts Charleston Charter on Friday before traveling across town to Wando on Saturday.
