Bishop England Volleyball on to Lower State

PAWLEYS ISLAND — Bishop England volleyball seems to be gaining steam as it powers toward what could be a national record 17th consecutive state championship. The Lady Bishops rolled through Waccamaw in straight sets Wednesday in the third round of the Class AAA playoffs. Waccamaw, the No. 1 seed out of Region 6, managed 12 points in the opening set before Bishop England clamped down, allowing the Warriors just six over the next two in the most lopsided match in the third round of the state playoffs. Mary Grace Furmanchik posted a match-high 10 kills with a 0.67 kill percentage, while Anna Warren added eight. Rhetta Moore led all players with 35 assists with five aces. Emma Lawrence finished with 11 digs, and Hannah Burns and Kathleen Griffith both had three blocks. Bishop England committed just two serve-receive errors through the match. Although the Bishops moved swiftly through the first two rounds, their 25-12, 25-6, 25-6 Lower State semifinal win over Waccamaw was the quickest of their postseason run. Bishop England will travel to Bluffton on Monday seeking its 17th straight Lower State title. Bluffton, the No. 1 seed out of Region 8, defeated Hanahan — 25-12, 25-15, 25-23 — on Wednesday.
