For the sixth straight year, Waccamaw High's volleyball season ended at the hands of Bishop England, as the Battling Bishops swept past the Lady Warriors on Wednesday night.
"It was a game of errors," said Waccamaw Coach Jill Schoen. "We came in intimidated. They're a big team, arch-rivals, and we played like it. We played shy the whole game."
Bishop England set the tone for the night early, racing out to an 8-1 lead in set one before a block by Savanna Morris.
The Battling Bishops then went on an 11-3 run, which was stopped by a kill from Grace Mann. Mann then added an ace, and the teams traded points to 22-8.
Down the stretch Waccamaw got kills from Morris and Sarah Krask, but lost 25-12.
Two early runs in set two gave Bishop England an 11-1 lead before a kill by Aaliyah Thomas.
After an ace by Anne Thomas Surratt, the Battling Bishops extended their lead to 22-3.
Waccamaw got a kill from Krask and a block from Mann down the stretch, but Bishop England took set two 25-6.
The Battling Bishops dominated set three, winning 25-6, to take the match and advance to their 17th straight Lower State final.
Mann had two kills and one ace; Krask had three kills; Thomas and Morris had two kills each; and Surratt had one ace.
Since 1988, Bishop England has won 22 state volleyball titles and lost three times in the finals.
Bishop England has ended Waccamaw’s season in each of Schoen's six years; three times in the Lower State quarterfinals and three times in the state semi-finals.
"I don't honestly know what I need to do to get beyond them," Schoen said. "How can we, little Pawleys Island, ... compete with a program that has a pool of thousands?"
Despite the loss, Schoen said it was a "great" season. The Lady Warriors were 17-7 overall and went 9-1 in the region to claim the title.
"This group of seniors have been absolutely amazing," Schoen said.
