Bishop England capped an undefeated run through its non-region slate with a 42-0 shutout of Academic Magnet Friday at Danny Jones Field in North Charleston.

For all that John Cantey has accomplished in his eight-plus year tenure as Bishops head coach, it’s the first time he’s ever led his team on a perfect run through its non-region schedule. In fact, no Bishops coach had since Cantey’s father, Jack, did so in 1987, back when most of the schedule was region play anyway.

Bishop England (6-0) rolled up 340 rushing yards, averaging 9.7 per carry. Quarterback Leo Albano ran for a game-high 84 yards and a touchdown on just five carries to lead a Bishops attack that saw five different players rush for 49 yards or more. Zach Pampu ran for 80 yards and a score on eight carries, and Jack Grooms carried the ball twice for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

Academic Magnet (2-3) entered the game averaging 271 yards of offense, 260 on the ground, but managed 105 total on Friday, as the Bishops defense surrendered just 94 rushing yards. Raptors sophomore Steven Schlosser put together 37 yards on 13 carries.

Albano scored on a 25-yard run and Carter Kilgore added a 4-yard score to open a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Grooms scored from 26 yards out and Albano connected with Christian Greavu on an 11-yard touchdown to send the Bishops into halftime leading 28-0.

Pampu added a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter and Grooms tacked on a 35-yard score in the fourth to complete the Bishops’ most lopsided win over a non-region opponent since 2011.

The Bishops aren’t quite resting on their laurels, though. Earlier in the week, Cantey talked about crumbling the first half of the schedule up and throwing it out as his team prepares for its first trek into Class AAA football since 1987.

Following a bye this week, Bishop England travels to Lake Marion (2-4) on Oct. 7 for its Region 7-AAA opener. Lake Marion is one of three teams in Region 7-AAA with a losing record this season.
