It’s only fitting that on Labor Day, the Bishop England football team put in a solid, workmanlike performance in Monday night’s 42-12 win over visiting St. John’s.
The Bishops improved to 3-0 on the young season with the victory and will host 3-0 Porter-Gaud on Friday night.
Junior quarterback Leo Albano and his backfield mates led the charge on Monday, combining to rush for 209 yards. Albano had three rushing touchdowns while adding 120 yards passing and a score. Carter Kilgore and Zach Pampu added about 50 yards rushing each.
“Their defensive front was pretty difficult to block, so we struggled running the option for a while there,” Bishop England coach John Cantey said. “It was a lot hotter than it is normally (5:30 start time), so we had to methodically do what we do. The enthusiasm wasn’t as high as I would have liked, but with missing three days of practice, I thought we executed pretty well overall.”
Bishop England scored twice in the first five minutes of the game, getting a 4-yard run by Albano and an 18-yard scoring pass from Albano to Pampu.
The Islanders (1-2) blocked a punt later in the first quarter and threatened to score, but a fumble at the 1-yard line stopped the threat. The Bishops responded with a 13-play, 98-yard drive with Albano’s 5-yard run pushing the lead to 21-0 with 8:42 left in the second quarter.
“That broke our back,” said St. John’s coach Dennie McDaniel of the long drive. “We played hard. It was our first time seeing the option this year, and I thought we played it well most of the time. They’re a good football team.”
The Islanders made a run in the second quarter, getting a 41-yard scoring run from LaRhynz Givens with 7:22 remaining. After recovering a Bishop England fumble on the ensuing kickoff, quarterback Cameron Smiley combined with Julian Degraffenreid on a 21-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 21-12.
But the Islanders muffed a punt late in the quarter and Albano scored on a 4-yard run with 38 seconds left in the half for a 28-12 advantage.
Kilgore scored on a 1-yard run with 5:40 left in the third, while Ian Butler’s 10-yard run with 1:57 remaining in the game pushed the lead to 42-12.
Givens, the leading rusher in the Lowcountry, finished the game with 90 yards but was limited in his playing time while dealing with issues related to dehydration.
