Bishop England sophomore Leo Albano is one of those kids who is pretty good at everything: Quarterback on the football team, starter on the basketball team.
On Wednesday, Albano used a curveball that he just started throwing three weeks ago to pitch the Bishops into the Class AA Lower State baseball finals. The left-hander worked five shutout innings in a 10-1 victory over Loris on Daniel Island, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
“Leo doesn’t do anything that’s really eye-popping,” said BE coach Mike Darnell, whose team is 17-9 and has won its last seven games. “But it’s like I told the team the other day, he’s just a little bit better than everybody else in everything.
“He’s always been fastball, change-up and knuckleball, but he started throwing that curveball about three weeks ago. He’s a quick learner and a student of the game.”
Albano helped the Bishops jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first with a two-out double, the first of four two-baggers in the inning. Gunnar Finneseth drove in two runs with a double, Paul Provost stroked an RBI double and Will Bastian added another two-run double.
