Daniel Island earns amateur spot

Daniel Island’s Jeremy Grab has earned a spot in next month’s U.S. Amateur that will be played at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan.

Grab, a rising senior at Wofford who played at Bishop England, shot 65-70—135 and finished second by one shot in qualifying held at Monroe (N.C.) Country Club. John Freeman of Asheville, N.C., was the medalist at 134 and Chris Jones of Charlotte beat Alejandro Villasana of Mexico in a playoff for the third spot.

Taylor Funk of Ponte Vedra, Fla., the son of pro golfer Fred Funk, shot 137 to earn the top spot in a qualifier held at Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie. College of Charleston golfer Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., finished second at 140 and Bradford Curren of Hammond Plains, Nova Scotia was third at 141. Greyson Sigg of Augusta was first alternate at 142.

A total of 312 golfers will play 36 holes of qualifying to determine the 64 golfers that advance to match play with the event scheduled Aug. 15-21.
