Bishop England and Wando’s girls basketball teams both remain in the top 10 of the latest S.C. Basketball Coaches Association state rankings, released Wednesday. Bishop England slipped six spots to ninth in the AAA girls poll, while Wando dropped four positions to eighth in the AAAAA girls rankings. Bishop England’s boys team is unranked for the first time this season. Wando (8-3) has gone 2-3 since appearing at No. 4 in the state rankings released on Dec. 12. The Warriors fell to Fort Dorchester in overtime before earning a 14-point road win at James Island. Wando picked up a win over Daniel in the Carolina Invitational holiday tournament between losses to Lake Mary (Fla.) and Richland Northeast. Bishop England (7-4) went 2-2 in the same span. The Bishops picked up a 17-point road win at AAAAA West Ashley before entering the holiday break. Bishop England dropped its first two games of the Carolina Invitational to Northwood Academy and Keenan before rebounding with an 11-point win over Mount Tabor (N.C.). Region 7 is proving to be one of the most competitive in the state as Goose Creek (10-2) is ranked second and Ashley Ridge (8-2) fifth in the AAAAA girls poll. The Gators fell one spot to second in the AAAAA girls poll following losses to AAAA No. 4 Greenville and Wyoming East (W.Va.). Goose Creek travels to Wando on Jan. 10 and will host the Warriors on Jan. 30. Ashley Ridge is ranked for the first time this season. The Swamp Foxes are tied with Wando and Fort Dorchester at 2-1 in the region standings. Ashley Ridge and Wando will meet in Summerville on Jan. 16 and in Mount Pleasant on Feb. 6. Bishop England appears to have some legitimate competition in Region 7-AAA as well. Manning moved up from seventh to third in the AAA girls rankings. Bishop England travels to Manning Dec. 16 and will host the Monarchs on Jan. 30. The Bishops have won eight straight region championships, losing just two of 100 conference games during that span. Bishop England’s boys team (4-7) peaked at No. 8 in the Dec. 12 poll. The Bishops have gone 2-2 since then, following losses to AAAAA No. 5 West Ashley and Pinewood Prep with a 23-point win over Beaufort and a 48-point rout of Palmetto Scholars. Region 7 foe Manning went from unranked to sixth. West Ashley (10-3) rose to fifth in the AAAAA boys rankings. The Wildcats are undefeated in Region 7 with a two-game lead over James Island, Summerville and rival Wando. The Warriors’ road game at West Ashley, originally scheduled for Jan. 5, has been rescheduled for Jan. 27. Gray Collegiate, the only South Carolina team to defeat Porter-Gaud this season, remains steady atop the AA boys rankings.
