Bishops steady in AAA

Wando’s perfect run through the first quarter of the season has seemingly validated its position among the state’s elite. The Warriors jumped from unranked in the preseason to No. 4 in the latest S.C. Basketball Coaches Association Class AAAAA girls poll, released Tuesday. Wando entered the week 6-0 with a 28-point average margin of victory. The Warriors’ best win came Dec. 2 with a seven-point road win at AAA preseason No. 1 Bishop England. Warriors forward Skylar Blackstock is living up to her preseason billing by the SCBCA as one of the best five players in AAAAA with career highs this season. The Clemson commit is averaging 21.2 points per game and pulling down 10.4 rebounds. She’s landing 6.4 steals and handing out 5.4 assists per night while committing less than two turnovers as the Warriors’ primary ball handler. Four-time defending state champion Bishop England fell from first to third in the AAA girls rankings. The Bishops took consecutive losses this month for the first time since 2009. The blemishes though came against AAAAA No. 1 Goose Creek and No. 4 Wando. The Bishops recovered from the two-game slide with a road win at First Baptist sandwiched between a pair of wins over AAAAA West Ashley. The Bishops have relied on their junior class early. Katie Cullum leads the team at nearly 11 points per game with almost seven rebounds. Katie Brooks is scoring 10 points with six rebounds and three steals per game, while Josie Dennis is averaging nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. The Bishop England boys rose one spot to No. 8 in the AAA rankings despite a 2-5 start to the season. The Bishops have played a loaded schedule so far, taking losses to AAAAA teams Goose Creek, Wando and West Ashley as well as SCISA state title contender First Baptist.
