It wasn’t the most fundamental play that Bishop England coach John Cantey has seen senior quarterback Leo Albano execute during career with the Bishops.

But Cantey couldn’t argue with the results.

Albano rushed for 189 yards and scored three touchdowns, but it was his pitch to running back Christian Greavu that might have been the highlight of the night as Bishop England cruised to a 29-7 victory at Hanahan Friday night.

With the victory, Bishop England improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in Region 7-AAA play. The Hawks fell to 3-6 and 1-2.

Midway through the third quarter with the game still very much in doubt, Albano came around the left end with Greavu trailing just behind him. As a Hanahan defender was about to bring Albano to the ground, the 6-2, 200-pound senior flipped the ball to Geravu, who sprinted 76 yards untouched into the end zone for the score.

Greavu’s TD gave the Bishops a 22-7 lead with 5:01 left to play in the third quarter and the Hawks never threatened again.

“You look at that play on the sideline as a coach and you’re like, ‘No don’t do that, but then you're like, yes, make that play,’” Cantey said. “He made a play that probably wasn’t the most fundamental sound play you can make in that situation, but he made it work and Greavu made it work for about 70 yards and that was awesome.”

Albano completed just one of eight passes for two yards, but more than made up for it with his feet, carrying the ball 24 times on the night.

“Leo is a playmaker and we’ve got a few playmakers on this team,” Cantey said. “We need to have the ball in his hands as much as possible. He made a ton of plays for us tonight.”

Greavu finished with 128 yards on 11 attempts.

The Bishops defense was equally impressive, holding the Hawks to less than 155 yards of total offense. Hanahan running back Quincy Mitchell, who was among the Lowcountry’s top rushers with more than 1,100 yards coming into the game, was held to 84 yards on 22 attempts.

“He’s a really good running back and we needed to tackle well and we did that most of the night,” Cantey said. “We controlled the line of scrimmage, we contained our gaps and kind of closed things down for him. We didn’t give him many lanes to run through and that was a key for us.”

After Bishop England’s Jarren McCoy kicked 22-yard field goal, Mitchell took over the Hawks offense. Mitchell carried the ball six times for 61 yards, including a 9-yard TD run to give the Hawks a 7-3 lead with 8:22 to play before halftime.

It took just four plays for the Bishops to retake the lead when Albano scored on a 20-yard run with 7:09 to play in the second quarter.

“That was a big answer for us,” Cantey said. “Hanahan had kind of grabbed the momentum, but we answered and got it back on our side.”

After a Bishop England interception, Albano scored on a 4-yard run to give the Bishops a 16-7 lead going into the locker room.
