Bishop England will close the Sertoma Football Classic for the second straight year.

The Bishops are slotted to face Goose Creek Friday, Aug. 11, in the finale of the 47th edition of the two-day preseason jamboree at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium. It’ll be the third time in the past four years that Sertoma has featured Bishop England in its final scrimmage.

Wando was noticeably absent from this year’s lineup, released Friday. The S.C. High School League announced in April that, per league rules, both Wando and James Island were barred from preseason jamborees as penalty for a skirmish between the two teams during a game last season. The Warriors will instead scrimmage Colleton County the week of Sertoma.

“We accept our medicine for what occurred,” Wando coach Jimmy Noonan said. “It takes away an opportunity for us to showcase our team. It’s unfortunate, especially for our seniors. Sertoma is such a great tradition in this area, for our program and our school. It’s disappointing, but we’ll accept our punishment and move forward.”

The losses of Wando — one of Sertoma’s largest draws every year — and James Island are particularly untimely for an event that’s seen dwindling attendance in recent years.

Fort Dorchester is barred from preseason jamborees this year. Summerville and Ashley Ridge are expected to again compete in their own Dorchester County jamboree with Woodland. That leaves Sertoma without the Lowcountry’s four largest schools, four of the 10 largest in the state.

Sertoma will include nine two-quarter scrimmages this season, up from four last year. Military Magnet will face SCISA defending state champion First Baptist and Palmetto Christian back to back on Thursday’s opening night. Oceanside will follow with a two-quarter scrimmage against Timberland.

Porter-Gaud will take on Academic Magnet for two quarters in Friday’s penultimate scrimmage. Bishop England then closes the event with its first matchup against Goose Creek since 1969.

Sertoma cut eight-man and powder-puff scrimmages from this year’s lineup to make time for the expanded two-quarter schedule. Coastal Christian fell victim to the revisions after participating the past two years.
