Bishop England's boys golf team placed second in the Class AAA state tournament Tuesday at True Blue Golf Club on Pawleys Island.

The Bishops shot a team score of 301 in the second round, 13 shots better than their first-round 314, to finish at 615. But that was not enough to keep pace with state champion Waccamaw, which totaled 290-288—578.

The Bishops' senior captain, Ben Quinque, shot a 74-70 to earn all-state honors. BE's other players included Tommy Verner (83-76), Sam Manning (75-80), Austin Dowd (82-82) and Brendan McHale (85-74).

Bishop England won three straight state titles from 2013-15.

In the Class AAAAA tournament at Wescott Plantation in North Charleston, Boiling Springs built an early lead and held off a late charge from Gaffney to win.

The title was the fourth consecutive for Boiling Springs after winning the previous three years in Class AAAA. Junior Trent Phillips led the winning effort, earning medalist honors by shooting 211. Phillips finished six strokes ahead of Hillcrest High’s Colby Patton.

Phillips shot 65 in Monday’s first round to take a commanding lead, following with a 71 and 75 to close out his tournament. Phillips won his third medalist honors in the last four years, becoming one of four players in state history to win three state tournaments. The University of Georgia commitment can become the first four-time winner next year.

Wando was the Lowcountry's top finisher, placing fourth with a 54-hole team score of 916, 27 strokes behind the champions. James Island was 10th at 975 and Fort Dorchester was 16th with a team score of 1,031.

The top local individual golf was Wando’s Wil Sheppard, who posted a three-day total 223 to finish in a tie for seventh-place. Sheppard, a senior, will be playing at South Carolina in the fall.

“I struggled in the first round to make putts so that was disappointing,” said Sheppard, who carded a 78 in Monday’s first round. “The second round on Monday I started to hit it better. Playing 36 on the first day was tough, especially with the heat. I played pretty well today. Overall, it was a good two days but I always feel like I could have played a little better.”

Sheppard followed his first round with par 72 on Monday’s second round and a one-over 73 on Tuesday. Wando’s Kyle Spencer shot 226 for the tournament, tying for 12th overall, while Austin Mosher shot 228 and tied for 15th.
