Wando track and field swept the Charleston County championships for the second straight season last Thursday at West Ashley High School. The Warriors boys team posted 181.5 points to finish 35 ahead of runner-up West Ashley. James Island followed in third place, while Bishop England took fourth and Academic Magnet eighth in the 11-team meet. Wando’s defending state champion girls team tallied 235.5 points, 106 ahead of second place James Island. Bishop England placed third in the team standings and Academic Magnet landed eight. Wando junior Patrick Spychalski broke the 3,200-meter county record for the third straight year. Spychalski captured the record in 2015, broke his own mark in 2016 and shaved more than 17 seconds off that previous best this year, finishing in 9:15.55 — the fastest time run in the state this year. Wando’s Doug Carson finished second, Academic Magnet’s Brett Schlesinger third and Bishop England’s Logan Desciak placed fourth. Henry Egloff won the 110-meter hurdles in 16:33 with teammate Elijah Bull in third. Bull also won the 400 hurdles in 59:10 with teammates Noah Barnhart in second and Jared Essig in fourth. Academic Magnet’s Colin Baker finished second in the 1,600 with Wando’s Tedros Eckstein in third and Academic Magnet’s Lyle Johnson in fourth. Aiden Richter took second in the 800 for Bishop England with Wando’s Bradley Sanders in fourth. Carter Crowley finished second in the 400 for Bishop England. The Bishops won the 800 relay in 8:34.55, three seconds ahead of second-place Wando. Wando’s Jaden Singleton leaped to third in the long jump. Jacob Wilkins took second in the discus throw with Wando’s David Kowalchick in third and Jaelen Edwards in fourth. Wando’s Dillon McCarthy won the pole vault at 13-06; Devin Cox placed second for Wando, Luke Vettel third for Bishop England and Worth Burnette fourth for the Warriors. John Farrell won the shot put at 46-05 with teammates Peyton Engelking in third and Stephen McDaniel fourth. Wando’s girls team showed particularly well in the jumps. The Warriors swept the long jump with Chandler Robinson winning at 16-05, Cierra Smalls in second and Amari Manigault in third. Robinson also won the triple jump at 10-06 with Bishop England’s Allison Seney in second and Wando’s Brianna Stamps in third. Manigault won the high jump at 5-02 with teammate Haley Baker second and Bishop England’s Mary Grace Furmanchik third. Chloe Bailey won the pole vault at 10-06 for Wando; Seney landed second and Stamps third. Emma Albano placed second in the discus throw for the Bishops. County record holder Zeniyah Lawrence defended her 100 title, winning in 12.51, and her 200 crown in 25.76; Smalls followed in second in both races. Bishop England’s Patricia George took second in the 400. Lily Heinold won the 800 in 2:23.40 with teammates Hailey Turk in second and Destiny Alston in fourth. Robinson won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.10 with Seney third. Julia Hunter won the 400 hurdles at 1:16.40 for the Bishops. Wando’s Piper Barnhart won the 1,600 in 5:37.69; Becca Bowers took third and Hannah Holloman fourth for the Warriors. Bishop England’s Camryn Deames won the 3,200 in 12:24.11 with teammate Kennedy Jordahl in second, Bowers in third and Chloe Santor fourth. Wando won the 100 relay at 49.06. Bishop England took the 800 relay at 10:12.46 with Wando in second. The Bishops also placed third in the 400 relay. First and second-place finishers from the Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester county meets earned automatic bids to the Tri-County meet April 19 at Cane Bay. The next two best finishers in each event are also invited. The Region 7-AAAAA meet will be held the following week at West Ashley.
