DANIEL ISLAND — St. Ignatius stole a 1-0 road win at Bishop England on Monday.

Ryan Jacobs lined a double into left field to score Tom Grosel from first and deliver the Ohio private school the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning. Bishops reliever Will Bastian retired the next two hitters on eight pitches to end the frame and sat down the Wildcats in order in the seventh.

Bishop England seemed primed to respond in the bottom of the sixth. Bastian drove a double into left field and Chris Dengler was hit by a pitch two batters later. Neither runner would advance any further, though, as the Bishops flew out twice to end the threat.

St. Ignatius lefty Connor Adams, a Louisville commit, controlled the opening 4 1-3 innings, striking out seven and allowing only one hit with two walks. Bishop England immediate attacked reliever Jack Eyink in the fifth, putting runners at the corners off a single, steal, wild pitch and a walk but that inning also ended in with a fly out.

Bishop England managed three hits all day, hitting .125 as nine different batters combined to strike out 10 times.

Bishops senior Shawn Runey held the Wildcats — Division I state semifinalists last season — scoreless through five innings. The sidearm right-hander scattered four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in his first start of the season.

Runey and Bishop England carefully navigated out of various jams. Ignatius put Drew Asadorian on second base one out into the top of the first. The Bishops ended the threat in the next at-bat as Runey forced a fly out and centerfielder Leo Albano gunned down Asadorian trying to tag up. Ignatus later put Alec Guy at third with one out in the fifth. Runey scooped a bunt attempt and threw out Guy sliding into home for the second out before forcing a line out in the next at-bat to end the inning.

Bishop England (5-6, 2-0) moves back into region play Tuesday against Lake Marion at home.
