Boiling Springs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Bishop England 8-7 Friday.

Gilbert struck out six in four innings, giving up five hits and four walks. The Clemson commit left the mound with the game tied 3-3 but soon after pushed the Bishops a run ahead with an inside-the-park home run off a shot to right field in the top of the fifth.

“Our defense made (Gilbert) unsuccessful,” Darnell said. “We had a few gaffs and ran the pitch count way up. If that game is played in May, we leave him in, but right now we’re trying to get some other guys some work.”

Bishop England’s relief pushed in a run with a hit batter in the fifth. Tobias Jordan then pounded a three-run shot over the center-field wall to lift Boiling Springs ahead 8-7 in the sixth. The Bishops stranded the tying run on second in the seventh.

Gilbert finished with the two RBIs and run scored. Ryan Gaffney and Chris Dengler both drove in a run, and Albano scored twice.

Boiling Springs, ranked seventh in AAAAA, went on to win the tournament with a 4-0 shutout of Easley Saturday night.

“Disappointing the way we gave that game away,” Darnell said. “If we learn from that and next time in the same situation we’re prepared, then it’s all worth it. It’s only March, but that was a frustrating loss.”
