BE girls blast Lake City in playoff opener

Bishop England girls basketball advanced through the opening round of the postseason for the 11th consecutive season on Monday. The three-time defending state champion Lady Bishops routed Lake City, 79-26, on Daniel Island. The top-seeded Bishops (20-3) advance to host Region 5 No. 2 seed Strom Thurmond in the second round of the AAA state playoffs on Thursday. Bishops sophomore forward Katie Cullum scored 12 of her career-high 22 points in the fourth quarter and pulled down 10 rebounds. Rhetta Moore scored nine of her 17 points in the first quarter and added eight more in the third for the Bishops who had eight players score four points or more in their highest scoring game of the season. Bishop England forced 21 steals, 10 from Moore, and outrebounded Lake City 48-14. The Bishops stretched a 10-point first quarter lead to 26 by halftime, allowing Lake City just two points in the second quarter. Bishop England’s boys team hosts Waccammaw in the opening round of the AAA playoffs on Tuesday. The Bishops (18-5) are riding a six-game winning streak and enter the postseason as a No. 1 seed for the first time since 2007. Wando girls basketball hosts Dutch Fork in its AAAAA opener on Tuesday. The Warriors’ boys team will travel to Irmo for their playoff opener on Wednesday. Academic Magnet girls host Carvers Bay in their AA opener on Tuesday. The Raptor boys will travel to top-seeded Calhoun County on Wednesday. The SCISA state tournament begins Feb. 17.
