Griffie Loy threw a new career-best at last weekend’s Army-Navy track and field Star Meet in West Point, N.Y.

The 2013 Bishop England graduate threw 58 feet, 11.25 inches to win the shot put event for Navy. The toss eclipses Loy’s previous high of 58-2.5, set at last season’s Patriot League Indoor Championship.

Loy had yet to crack 55 feet through six meets this season but saw a tremendous jump in just his second meet competing away from home as a senior.

“I always feel like I can throw further when we’re away because I’m out of my comfort zone a little bit,” Loy told the Navy Sports Magazine Show days before the meet. “I think I’ll throw a harder punch backed into a corner when I’m scared, you know, a little off my rocker than I am just every day. It kind of shocks the nervous system a little bit and I think that really gets it all firing for me.”

Navy ultimately lost to Army, 97-84; its first loss to the rival Black Knights in the past 11 Star Meet matchups. Navy won four of the six individual events in the field, including’s Loy’s shot put throw, but took just two of nine individual events on the track.

Loy is a co-captain for the Midshipmen this season. He’s won Patriot League championships both indoors and outdoors the past two seasons, as well as earning Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America All-East honors in 2016.
