DANIEL ISLAND — The surprised looks on the faces of either coach told the tale of the final 10 seconds.

Keenan coach Reggie McLain seemed pleasantly relieved.

“We were getting worried that we may have to use a timeout,” McLain said. “We weren’t’ getting the set that we wanted and time was running out and then she went for it.”

Bishop England coach Paul Runey sported a more perplexed look.

“I thought I saw more than one green jersey there playing defense,” Runey said. “I don’t know how she got around both of them. And to get an open layup, that’s unacceptable.”

Logan McDaniel waited until the clock melted down to four seconds before making a frantic move from the 3-point line. McDaniel turned the corner around a screen and found a clear path to the basket. The ball rolled off her fingertips and in just as the final buzzer sounded to score Keenan a 40-38 win over Bishop England Wednesday in the second day of the sixth annual Carolina Invitational.

Keenan (5-3) advances to face St. Albans (W. Va.) in the tournament’s Palmetto Division finals while Bishop England (8-2) will play Beaufort in a third-place consolation game on Thursday.

“We were out of sync the whole game really,” Runey said. “We just looked lethargic out there.”

Bishop England shot 25 percent from the field and connected on just one of nine attempts from beyond the 3-point line, a stark contrast from last season’s AA state championship game in which the Bishops fired past the Raiders with ease, 53-37.

“We gave up too many easy baskets last time,” McLain said. “We wanted to pack it in and make them take more outside shots today. We were a little more aggressive, especially in the second half."

Bishop England led by four points with nearly six minutes left to play but scored just two baskets the rest of the way as Keenan clawed back. Rhetta Moore hit a baseline jumper to pull the Bishops within a point, 38-37, with 1:10 remaining. Moore then stole the inbounds pass and drew contact going to the rim but crashed to the floor without a whistle blowing.

Raiders junior JaDiamond Hickman finished with a game-high 19 points off five 3-pointers, while McDaniel added eight points for Keenan.

The Bishops entered the game averaging 16 steals but managed just nine on Wednesday. Moore grabbed five of them herself along with handing out five of the Bishops’ nine assists and scoring a team-high 13 points. Christine Egede scored 10 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. Moore and Egede accounted for all but four of the Bishops’ points in the second half.

“If we’re going to be a good team, everybody has to contribute,” Runey said. “We’re relying on a couple people to do it all and tonight that wasn’t good enough.

"We didn’t get a whole lot of transition and that’s our bread and butter. How many layups did we give them off turnovers? How many turnovers did we give away on the inbounds? And we lost by two points. There are seem teaching moments in there.”
