Bishop England wins Hoops for Hope tournament

Bishop England is off to its best start in a decade after winning the Ashley Ridge Hoops for Hope tournament this week in Summerville. The Bishops followed a 70-43 win over Military Magnet on Monday with a 56-51 win against Woodland on Tuesday before topping Ashley Ridge 62-42 Wednesday in the tournament title game. Bishops forward Leo Albano averaged 20 points and six rebounds over the three-day stretch to earn tournament MVP honors. Bishop England enters its holiday break 9-3 overall, the program’s best start to a season since 2006. The Bishops return to the court Jan. 3 against Academic Magnet in North Charleston. Bishop England 70, Military Magnet 43 Albano scored a career-high with 29 points in a dominant win over Military Magnet on Monday. The junior lefty shot 11-of-16 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. Christian Drummond added 15 points and six boards for the Bishops. Bishop England turned an eight-point first-quarter lead into a 40-21 advantage by halftime. The Bishops outscored Military Magnet 17-11 through the third quarter. Bishop England 56, Woodland 51 Bishop England trailed Woodland by three points at halftime but used a strong defensive effort in the third quarter to secure the win. After surrendering 29 points in the first half, the Bishops limited Woodland to just six in the third quarter as they turned in 15 of their own to take a six-point lead into the final frame. Brendan McHale scored a team-high 22 points. Albano added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Drummond finished with 11 points and 12 boards. Bishop England outrebounded Woodland, 40-28, including 25-17 on the defensive glass. Woodland shot 38 percent from the field.
